Melghat is a tribal belt consisting of two Talukas of Amravati district with 200000 population, spread in 315 villages covering 2400 sq. kms. on the Satpura Mountains. The villages are situated in the midst of forest (reserved and wild life sanctuary). The lifestyle of the people in these villages is primitive, (as modernization is yet to step into these villages) with bare minimum facilities and amenities.
The literacy rate is ca. 30% and ca 60% people live below poverty line. They live practically an isolated life as they hardly have any contact with big cities. Most of these people are small or marginal farmers with 2 to 5 acres of land and 20% are landless labourers. The land is not fertile; hence they can take only one crop as they depend fully on the monsoon rains. Since agriculture does not give them full time employment, seasonal migration is a common phenomena as a result of which children suffer as they cannot go to school. Being illiterate , they suffer from various kinds of exploitation and to help these people out of this situation, our association spares no time or effort.
